Saphenion® – vein glue for the therapy of varicose vein thrombosis? The thrombosis in the area of the superficial truncal veins and cutaneous veins (superficial venous thrombosis – OVT; thrombophlebitis) is not a rare complication; it requires drug or surgical therapy if the thrombosis grows in the direction of deep veins. This situation is particularly striking in the case of thromboses of the great saphenous vein GSV and small saphenous vein SSV as well as other saphenous veins and leads to deep vein thrombosis in around 20% of cases.

Saphenion®: Risk of thrombosis when driving a car or motorcycle – Venous thromboembolism (leg vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) is a major therapeutic problem in healthcare. It is estimated that there are 400 cases per 100,000 people (0.4% of the total population), with possible complications ranging from severe (thrombosis of the leg/pelvic veins resulting in post-thrombotic syndrome) to life-threatening (pulmonary embolism resulting in death). Following the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a decline in air passenger numbers. Travel by private car, motorcycle, or bus has become more common.

Saphenion®: Therapy for leg vein thrombosis – In Germany alone, more than 40,000 people die every year as a result of pulmonary embolism – that’s more deaths than from road traffic accidents, AIDS, prostate and breast cancer combined! Worldwide, one in four deaths is related to thrombosis! In general, leg vein thrombosis is still considered an underestimated acute illness.
For a long time, leg vein thrombosis was treated in hospital with strict bed rest for 7 – 14 days, intravenous heparinization and, if necessary, the application of a zinc paste bandage.
It was only after therapy with low-molecular-weight heparins (NMH) that could be administered on an outpatient basis began to gain acceptance that new options for the treatment of leg vein thrombosis emerged.

Saphenion®: Tiefe Beinvenenthrombosen – ambulante Lysetherapie

Deep vein thrombosis: It is now recognized that thrombosis of the lower leg veins is just as dangerous as thrombosis of the knee and thigh veins. Recent studies show that the risk of pulmonary embolism is higher in cases of lower leg vein thrombosis than previously assumed. The latest figures show an almost twice as high risk of pulmonary embolism (60% vs. 39.5%) and thus also a higher mortality rate (7.2% vs. 3.9%). However, while knee and thigh vein thromboses tend to occur spontaneously, the cause of lower leg vein thrombosis is a previous operation, an accident involving the leg, or other illness-related bed rest. Based on this, active drug therapy or lysis/surgery is also required for the treatment of lower leg vein thrombosis. Thrombosis prophylaxis after surgical procedures should also be significantly more pronounced.

Saphenion®: Compression massage for leg artery occlusion – this additional physical therapy for arterial occlusive disease of the leg arteries (PAD) is not yet standard. Scientific reports on the use of pneumatic compression therapy for diabetic and / or smoker’s leg have only been available for about 15 years. And we have to admit that when we first started out in vascular surgery, compression therapy for patients with leg artery disease was a No Go!

Saphenion®: Turning Time at Charité – Elite exchange

Saphenion®: Turning Time at Charitè – The Berlin Charité, Germany’s well-known hospital, was at the same time a center of research, teaching, and further education. It was part of the university, which was given the name Humboldt in GDR times. After the end of the GDR a considerable exchange of management personnel took place in the Charité, the media supplied the accompanying music with Stasi hysteria and scandal stories. The Charité, also in GDR times nationally and internationally a well-known university hospital, now seemed to have been a branch of the MfS and the Politbureau in public perception.
